For the month of December, we are holding one virtual session in partnership with Oklahoma State University’s Unmanned Systems Research Institute. The session will include two presentations, along with time for Q&A. Details about each session, along with registration links, are included below. Registration is free! Thursday, December 17th, 2-3:30pm Autonomous Surveying of Water at the Surface Muwanika Jdiobe is from Uganda, and he has a double major in mechanicals and aerospace engineering from Oklahoma State University. He recently completed his masters and will be starting his PhD in the Spring of 2021. Autonomous Aerial Surveying of a Large Body of Water Andrew Cole is from Edmond, Oklahoma and graduated from Oklahoma State University in the Spring of 2020 with a double major in mechanicals and aerospace engineering. He is currently pursuing a masters and has been with the Unmanned Systems Research Institute as a student worker for the past two and a half years. Moderated by Victoria Natalie, MS. Mark your calendars for movies, s’mores and more on Nov. 19, 2020! We’re partnering with our neighbors at the Embassy Suites Downtown to turn their parking lot into the Innovation District’s own car cinema. The Junction Coffee food truck will be serving up some tasty treats and hot cocoa for us, and we’ll be giving out free s’more coupons to anyone who drops off a STEM-themed board game donation for our district’s elementary and middle schools. Attendance is free, masks are required and more details are coming soon! Evaluation of Arctic Stable Boundary Layer Dynamics During the 2018 ISOBAR Campaign Brian is a Meteorology Ph.D. student working with the Center for Autonomous Sensing and Sampling at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, OK. His primary project focuses on characterizing turbulence based on measurements of temperature, humidity, and wind speed from remotely piloted aircraft systems. In his talk he will present preliminary results using data from the 2018 ISOBAR field campaign that took place above the sea ice off the Finnish island of Hailuoto that indicate that clouds in the wintertime Arctic boundary layer have strong implications on low-level turbulence when compared with cloud-free conditions, which could have significant outcomes for improving how numerical weather prediction models represent stable boundary layers. Low-Cost Sensor Integration for Autonomous Exploratory Studies of Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide Gustavo is a Electrical and Computer Engineering Ph.D. student working with the Center for Autonomous Sensing and Sampling at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, OK. Gustavo’s main research focus is on integrating sensors and designing sampling systems for unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). He will present on a low-cost, open-source autonomous sampling system for atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations. Moderated by Phil Chilson, Ph.D. Register to attend the Oklahoma City Innovation District Student Showcase on Autonomous Systems. This series will highlight student research projects on autonomous system technologies and allow for meaningful interaction with the students to gain a better understanding of their research. For the month of June, we are holding two virtual sessions in partnership with The University of Oklahoma School of Meteorology, Center for Autonomous Sensing and Sampling (CASS). Each session will include two presentations along with time for Q&A. Details about each session, along with registration links, are included below. Registration is free, but is limited for each session, so don’t wait to sign up! Improving Wind Speed Estimates from Weather Sensing, Rotary-Wing UAS Tyler is a Research Associate at the Cooperative Institute for Mesoscale Meteorological Studies and a Meteorology Ph.D. student working with the Center for Autonomous Sensing and Sampling at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, OK. His work focuses on algorithm development to improve weather observations from UAS and ground-based remote sensors. This talk will focus on work that is being done to improve wind speed measurements from profiling UAS. The CopterSonde: An innovative UAS for Atmospheric Boundary Layer Observations Tony is a Electrical and Computer Engineering Ph.D. student working with the Center for Autonomous Sensing and Sampling at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, OK. His research focuses on the design and development of the CopterSonde, which is a unmanned aircraft system designed with the purpose of sampling thermodynamic and kinematic parameters of the lower Earth’s atmosphere, with a focus on vertical profiles in the planetary boundary layer. In his talk, Tony will discuss how incorporating innovative adaptive sampling techniques and optimizing sensor placement into the design of the CopterSonde resulted in a system comparable to radiosondes but with improved spatiotemporal resolution. Moderated by Elizabeth Pillar-Little, Ph.D. A special thank you to the sponsor of this happy hour, INSURICA! 5:00pm – 7:00 pm Vanessa House Beer Company 118 NW 8th Street Oklahoma City, OK 73102 Save the date for our next Walk Over Wednesday event on November 13 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. We hope you’ll join us for a chance to network and enjoy local treats from Whole Latte Pie!
