OKC Innovation District kicks off 3rd annual Innovation Week

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – The OKC Innovation District kicked off its third annual Innovation Week on Tuesday.

Hundreds of OKCPS students filed into Science Museum Oklahoma for the event.

“They come out of the auditorium, their eyes are just wide open. It’s a great time,” said Koey Keylon of BioTC Oklahoma. “Seventh graders, we found out were just like the perfect sweet spot at that age. They’re very involved and excited to learn about STEM.”

Throughout the week, students will get to try activities like a flight simulator, an aerial drone competition and operate robots.

The Oklahoma City Innovation District said the event is expected to draw in 1,200 total students. According to the nonprofit, 91% of students who attend come from an economically disadvantaged household.

Walker said it’s also crucial for students to see the opportunities available to them in Oklahoma.

“They can dream, they can do big things in life, and these are things that they can do right here in the state,” said Walker.

Innovation Week wraps up on Thursday, October 3.
